Alex May Hughes, Solo Show: Glass & Gold
Alex May Hughes is a sign painter and glass gilder based in West London. She graduated from The London College of Communication in 2012, where she studied Typography, developing her interest in traditional Victorian signage and mirrors. After her graduation Hughes began an apprenticeship with the acclaimed London sign writer Pete Hardwicke, under his supervision she began painting signs on numerous shop fronts and restaurants in East London, picking up a particular enthusiasm for working with gold leaf on glass.
‘Glass & Gold’ is Alex’s second solo show, set in London’s 71a Gallery, and will display previously unseen typographic and illustrative works on glass, using precious metal leaf, pearl shell and traditional sign making techniques.
Also on display will be commercial pieces as well as collaborative works with prop-maker Robert Southworth.
This show aims to explore the material intersection in between the fragile, the finite and the rare.
